More-than-human lifeworlds in the Altai and Saian Mountains

I study human-environment relationships among pastoralists in the ecologically, ethnically, and linguistically diverse cross-border region of Inner Asia. My focus is on the deep sense of belonging that pastoralists have with nonhuman beings and their homelands. In my academic monograph, The Horse in My Blood: Multispecies Kinship in the Altai and Saian Mountains (Berghahn Books, 2024), I examined the role of horses in identity negotiations and their involvement in political life in Tyva. My current research projects take a multi-faceted approach to human-environment relationships, exploring them through multispecies ethnography, Indigenous research methodologies and studies in research archives, material culture, and environmental linguistics.
