CNEAS Visiting Fellows Call for Applications
(Term of Fellowship during the period between October 2024 and September 2025)


The Center for Northeast Asian Studies (CNEAS), Tohoku University, is seeking visiting fellows. Our center has a visiting fellowship program to promote cooperative research activities with distinguished researchers in Northeast Asian Studies who belong to research institutes abroad. In this program, researchers accepted as visiting fellows will be provided with traveling costs from/to home countries and a salary to cover living expenses in Japan, as well as various research resources of the Center and opportunities to carry out cooperative research with CNEAS staff and faculty.

The Center provides Fellows with the following:

1)     One round-trip ticket (economy class) between the place of work of the successful applicant and Tokyo/Sendai. Please note the applicant is required to arrive directly in Tokyo/Sendai from the place of work when starting the fellowship, and go directly home after its completion, without stopovers. Otherwise CNEAS will not cover the air ticket. Fellows are welcome to bring their family, but at their own expense. Fellows must pay any shipping and customs clearance charges for their own luggage.

2)     The salary is approximately 400,000 yen to 600,000 yen (before tax and etc. ) per month, depending on the applicant’s present status.

3)     The visiting fellow is required to join the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Aid Association, which contains health insurance and pension program.

4)     Successful visiting fellows will be provided with their own desk, bookshelf and internet connection. They can also use the university library and have full access to the university-subscribed electronic journals.

5)     Fellows may use the university accommodation during the fellowship program but in case of no vacancy they will need to find a private flat with the aid of the host scholar.

 


Fellowship Periods and Posts
This call for CNEAS Visiting Fellows is for the term from 1st October 2024 to 30th September 2025 (Term 2024-2025).


The fellowship period is required to be a continuous period of a minimum of 3 months (more than 91days) to a maximum of 6 months during the period of October 2024 to March 2025 or April 2025 to September 2025. 

 

Available posts for the visiting fellow: 8 posts (average 3months stay) for Term 2024-2025.

After the selection process, CNEAS reserves the right to decide the period of stay for the nominated applicants at the Center. Nominated applicants cannot set the period of stay beyond Term 2024-2025.



Obligations
Researchers accepted as visiting fellows are required to give at least one lecture on their research topic during their stay in CNEAS, and are also required to write a short essay on their studies for our Center newsletter. They might be required to present their talk in seminar or symposium organized by CNEAS. The researchers are also welcome to contribute to Northeast Asian Studies, an interdisciplinary journal of the Center.

 


Eligibility
Applicants are required to satisfy all of the following conditions:
1) Researchers who have academic achievements in Northeast Asian Studies by humanities, social scientists and natural scientist or whose academic achievements are expected to contribute methodologically to Northeast Asian Studies.
2) Researchers who are employed in universities, or related academic institutes are required to get the permission of the application of CNEAS visiting fellow from the responsible person of their affiliation.

3) Researchers must hold a PhD degree, or hold academic achievements which can be evaluated as equivalent to those of PhD holders. This fellowship is not available to individuals currently pursuing graduate degrees or post-doctoral studies.
4) Researchers must contact one of the permanent research staff of CNEAS (host scholar) in advance, and receive his/her agreement on the acceptance of them as cooperative researchers.
5) Researchers may neither hold Japanese nationality nor hold permanent job posts in Japan.
6) Researchers must be under 70 years old.

The deadline for applications for the 2024-2025 visiting fellowship is December 31, 2023. Applicants will be notified of the results by the end of March 2024 by e-mail. Individual queries about the results of selection sent prior to this time by email, fax, or telephone will not receive a response.
