The biggest mystery of evolutionary ecology: why are there many kinds of organisms?

Northeast Asia region (e.g. Japan, China, Korea, and the Far East Russia) has a high diversity of mollusks (land and freshwater snails) due to different geographical such as continents, islands and ancient lakes. In addition, mollusks are a good material for evolutionary ecology because they reflect ecology and environment in their shells which preserve well in the fossil record. Through various combined approaches in molecular biology, paleontology and evolutionary ecology, I am conducting comparative studies on the evolutionary history of mollusks across the globe.
