An Anthropological Analysis of the Modernization of Nomads and the Commercialization of Pastoralism.

Nomadism is often associated with two contrasting images— “primitive” on the one hand and “freedom” on the other. However, Nomadic societies maintain their own distinctive forms of order. Mobility, constitutes a highly flexible and rational survival strategy, shaped by adaptation to natural environments and attuned to the behavioral of animals. By contrast, modernity is grounded in a social system premised on sedentary life, and its expansion has directly and indirectly promoted the sedentarization of nomadic populations. As a result, livelihoods and daily life once centered on mobility have been fundamentally reconfigured, accompanied by broader transformations in social and cultural spheres. Focusing on these processes of change, this study aims to elucidate the reconfiguration of pastoral societies and the dynamics underlying it.
