Center for Northeast Asian Studies, Tohoku University

Research – including experiments-- involving human subjects carried out at the Center for Northeast Asian Studies is undertaken through an institutional review process. Doing so ensures ethical considerations are incorporated in the research in a transparent way. To this end, basic principles, a review committee, and implementation measures were established.

Basic Principles: Surveys and experiments shall be conducted in accordance with scientific and ethical principles. This includes using informed consent, avoiding harm to subjects, protecting personal information, returning knowledge to society, and complying with ethical rules.

Review Committee: The bylaws lay out details of the operation and make-up of the Ethics Committee (Review Board). The Committee review focuses on reducing ethical and social problems in research and experiments. Reviews shall be completed as soon as possible and no longer than 30 days from receipt of application.

Implementations measures: If the application meets all required conditions, as laid out in the Bylaws, the Committee will issue a certificate of permission. In the event of accidents, ethical problems, or complaints from a subject, the investigator shall promptly report the details to the Review Committee. The Review Committee shall deliberate on how to address the situation and take action to implement it.

The Bylaws came into effect June 28th 2021 and applied to CNEAS researchers and affiliated members from July 1, 2021.
